Nail Ailments
Ingrown Toenails
What Is It?
An
ingrown toenail is a toenail with an edge that
pushes into the skin and soft tissue at the side
of the nail. This causes redness, swelling and
pain, and can lead to infection. Symptoms can be
worse when you are wearing a shoe, which puts
pressure on the nail. The nail on the big toe
becomes ingrown more often than other toenails.
Ingrown
toenails can be caused by cutting toenails
improperly, by wearing shoes that fit poorly or
by injuring the nail bed. Ingrown toenails also
can run in the family.
Ingrown
nails, the most common nail impairment, are nails
whose corners or sides dig painfully into the
soft tissue of nail grooves, often leading to
irritation, redness, and swelling. Usually,
toenails grow straight out. Sometimes, however,
one or both corners or sides curve and grow into
the flesh. The big toe is usually the victim of
this condition, but other toes can also become
affected.
|
Ingrown toenail may be caused by:
| Improperly trimmed
nails (Trim then straight across, not
longer than the tip of the toes. Do not
round off corners. Use toenail clippers.) |
| Heredity |
| Shoe pressure;
crowding of toes |
| Repeated trauma to
the feet from normal activities |
|
If you
suspect an infection due to an ingrown toenail, immerse
the foot in a warm salt water soak, or a basin of soapy
water, then apply an antiseptic and bandage the area.
| Ingrown
nails may develop for many reasons. Some cases
are congenital--the nail is just too large for
the toe. Trauma, such as stubbing the toe or
having the toe stepped on, may also cause an
ingrown nail. However, the most common cause is
tight shoe wear or improper grooming and trimming
of the nail. Figure 2 illustrates the anatomy of
a toenail. |

People with
diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or other
circulatory disorders must avoid any form of self
treatment and seek podiatric medical care as soon as
possible.
Treatment and Prevention
Ingrown toenails should be
treated as soon as they are recognized. In many cases,
people with uninfected ingrown toenails can obtain relief
with the following simple regimen:
- Soak the feet in warm
salt water
- Dry them thoroughly
with a clean towel
- Apply a mild
antiseptic solution to the area
- Bandage the toe
